Web3 is a broad label for blockchain networks, decentralized applications, digital ownership, and the companies that build related infrastructure. It is not one asset class with one source of return. Buying a token, owning shares in a listed company, using a regulated exchange-traded product, and investing in a private startup create different rights and risks. A practical 2026 strategy begins by choosing the exposure deliberately, not by treating every project with a wallet connection as the same investment.

Fully diluted valuation can help expose future supply, but no single metric is sufficient. Compare the implied value with actual usage, sustainable fees, competitive alternatives, and the rights held by token owners. Be cautious when a project emphasizes transaction counts without explaining subsidized activity, related wallets, or the cost of acquiring users.
Understand custody before buying
With self-custody, the investor controls keys and bears responsibility for backups, transactions, device security, and inheritance. With third-party custody, the provider controls access and creates operational, legal, and insolvency risk. Neither choice is automatically correct for everyone.
Ask how assets are segregated, whether they may be lent or pledged, who controls withdrawals, what insurance actually covers, and what happens if the provider fails. Map the major risks

- Adoption case: Usage grows, regulation becomes clearer, security improves, and the investment captures part of the created value.
- Stagnation case: Technology continues to operate but user growth, fees, and investor interest remain limited.
- Failure case: A security event, governance dispute, regulation, competition, or treasury shortage damages the product and liquidity.
For each case, write what evidence would appear, how the position would be valued, whether an exit would be possible, and what action you would take. If the plan depends on always finding a later buyer at a higher price, it is speculation rather than an investment thesis.
Operational checklist
- Verify official domains, contract addresses, and legal entities through more than one source.
- Read primary documentation, disclosures, audits, governance proposals, and risk factors.
- Test deposits and withdrawals with a small amount before transferring more.
- Keep trading and long-term storage separate when direct custody is used.
